William Eklund Traded to Ottawa in Blockbuster Trade

The San Jose Sharks have announced that they have traded forward William Eklund along with forward prospects Kasper Halttunen and the rights to Brandon Svoboda to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the ninth overall draft selection (originally Florida Panthers) in this year's NHL Draft.

William Eklund, the 2021 seventh overall draftee just finished up his third full season with the Sharks where he finished the season 53 points totaling his tenure with the Sharks with a total of 163 points (50 goals, 113 assists).

Eklund reunites with former Sharks' teammate Fabian Zetterlund who was dealt to Ottawa back during the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline.

The trade came days after Ottawa announced that they have sent captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for a hand-full of picks, one of which being the ninth pick that the Sharks received.

This leaves the Sharks with three first round picks for the 2026 NHL Draft. The Sharks currently own their second overall pick, Florida's ninth overall pick and lastly Buffalo's 27th overall pick.

With Eklund traded this leaves new speculation brewing on whom General Manager Mike Grier will select at second overall.
