Ryan Warsofsky's New Extension Comes With Clear Expectations for the Sharks
On Thursday, General Manager Mike Grier announced that Ryan Warsofsky has signed on to a multi-year extension as the Sharks' Head Coach. As the team enters an 84-game season with a shortened training camp, Warsofsky will be entering his third season behind the bench. Previously serving as assistant coach under David Quinn for two years (2022-2024), this will be his fifth season with the Sharks in total.
Warsofksy finished the 2025-26 season 39–35–8, nearly leading the Sharks to the playoffs. As San Jose looks to build on that progress, Warsofsky's expectations for the upcoming season are focused on consistency and establishing their identity.
"Our identity is super important for our team," Warsofsky said. "We're going to grow and make mistakes, but we're going to grow through our X's and O's and our structure and we're going to learn as we go, but our identity can't waiver."
That identity starts with strong defense, not just on the blueline. Warsofsky said the message was made clear from the first meeting: "It needs to be six people on the ice that defend. That includes our goalies, that includes our D, that includes our forwards." With the condensed camp, Warsofsky acknowledged that mistakes may happen, but wants their structure and style of play to remain consistent.
The youngest coach in the league also recognized the "speed bumps" that are expected along the way as the defensive group continues to find their footing. "Some of them make good strides, some might hit some speed bumps," Warsofsky said. "We'll have to continue to work with them."
Team Teal has four pre-season games ahead to put those expectations to the test. After that, Warsofsky's third season officially begins, with 84 regular season games ahead to see how quickly the Sharks can turn their identity into consistent results.
