Earned, Not Given: Ivar Stenberg Takes on the Rookie Faceoff
As the San Jose Sharks gear up for the 2026 Rookie Faceoff this weekend, second overall draft pick Ivar Stenberg is one of the young prospects stepping onto the ice. The jump in speed and standard in the NHL is immediate for the 18-year-old, who isn't just recognizing the talent surrounding him, but also the daily work ethic required in the league.
Stenberg arrives in San Jose as one of the most NHL-ready, being named Best Junior last season and leading all under-20 players in both assists (22) and points (33). He's made his impact internationally, too, helping Sweden earn U20 World Junior gold as one of the team's top three players.
When asked about practicing alongside established veterans like Jacob Trouba and Darnell Nurse, Stenberg talked about the high standard set across the team.
"Just how skilled everyone is and how they work every day," Stenberg said regarding what stood out during practice. "It's pretty impressive and it's something I need to look at and take with me."
Stenberg's perspective comes with plenty of firsthand experience. His older brother, Otto Stenberg, was a 2023 first-round pick (25th overall) for the St. Louis Blues, and offered simple, practical advice for Ivar ahead of camp.
"He told me to just work hard, do my best. Come ready to training camp, do your best and see what happens. If I'm not making it the first time, I'm going to work harder."
Whether lighting it up this weekend or pushing it later on in training camp, Stenberg is showing the marks of a player ready to secure a permanent spot.
The Sharks host the tournament, and their own matchup is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 12 at 5pm PST against the Los Angeles Kings. Team Teal hits the ice again the following evening, taking on the Utah Mammoth on Sunday at 5pm.
