SHARKS DROP LEAD LATE, LOSE IN SHOOTOUT TO NEW JERSEY

Updated: Jan 18

The San Jose Sharks played in quite the spectacle this Monday afternoon:

First, the puck dropped at 1 PM on a federally recognized holiday, MLK Day.

Second, the first period played out in an unorthodox manner due to a broken kick-plate (the yellow trim on the bottom of the rink boards).

Third, the Sharks allowed a goal just 27 seconds into the first period while also taking the lead with 3.7 seconds left in the first period.

The Sharks seemed to control and dominate the game, winning the battles to loose pucks, getting outstanding goaltending, and controlling the pace of the action. Two defensive mistakes occurred in the goal crease, by both Timo Meier and Jaycob Megna, which ultimately cost the Sharks this game:

- Meier interfered with James Reimer on the first goal by failing to stop in stride quickly enough to avoid getting his skates in between Reimer's pads.

- Megna skated across the crease and managed to make contact with Reimer's lower right goalie pad/skate while the puck was heading toward the net.

Despite the Sharks giving New Jersey a gift with 2 points in the standings, the Sharks looked way better than their previous performance, in which they lost 7-1 to the Edmonton Oilers. Still, the Sharks' inability to close games is starting to hurt the home crowd who are still waiting for the 5th win at The Tank this season. The San Jose Sharks will host the Dallas Stars on Wednesday.
